A lot of coverage tells fashion brands they must comply with the Digital Product Passport in 2027. It is a tidy headline. It is also wrong, and getting the timeline right matters, because it changes how you plan and what you tell your board.

Inclusion is not a mandate

When a product category appears in the EU's plan, it does not mean a DPP is required for it the next year. It means that category is scheduled for study, and then for a binding rule, the delegated act, that sets its own compliance date.

The dates that are already fixed

The first hard DPP deadline is batteries, which become mandatory in February 2027. That is the proof these dates are real. The EU DPP Registry has a legal deadline to be operational by July 19, 2026. For textiles, the delegated act is expected in 2027, and that act defines exactly what a textile DPP must contain and which carriers are allowed.

So when do textiles actually have to comply?

Once a delegated act is published, companies typically get an 18-month transition before compliance is mandatory. With the textile act expected in 2027, that puts the real deadline around 2028 to 2029.

Why you still start now

Here is the catch that the "relax, it is 2028" reading misses. The work behind a DPP is not a project you switch on in the final 18 months. It is item-level serialization, clean and structured product data, traceability across your supply chain, and durable identifiers on the product. Working backward from the compliance window, that work needs to be in place well before the rules bite. It is the real lead time, and it is longer than the transition itself. Start now and the deadline is a formality. Start late and it runs you.

This is bigger than the EU

Comparable rules are advancing in Canada, California, the UK, Japan, and China, and through the UN (UN/CEFACT Recommendation 49). Build a DPP-ready foundation today and you are preparing for several markets at once, not just EU access.
