The Foundation of a Future-Proof DPP: Standards and GS1 Digital Link

Loading date...Most DPP conversations start with a question about technology: which tag should we bet on? It is the wrong first question, and answering it too early is how brands end up rebuilding later.
Start with the standard, not the tag
The safest, most future-proof foundation for a Digital Product Passport is not a specific tag. It is standards, interoperability, and clean data. Get those right and you can change or combine carriers later without rebuilding.
GS1 Digital Link is the bridge
At the center of that foundation is GS1 Digital Link. It connects the physical product to its digital record by turning a product's identifier into a standardized web address that resolves to the right experience for whoever accesses it: a consumer page, a brand view, or a machine-readable feed for authorities.
Two things make it the future-proof choice. First, it is carrier-neutral. The same Digital Link can be carried by a QR code, a GS1 DataMatrix, an NFC tag, or a RAIN RFID inlay, so your carrier becomes a practical decision rather than a lock-in. Second, it is the identifier direction the market and the DPP standards are already moving toward.
The three things any carrier must do
Whatever carrier holds that Digital Link has to meet three requirements. It must be persistent, so it stays with the product for its whole life. It must be globally unique, at the model, batch, or item level set per category. And it must be machine-readable by consumers, authorities, sorters, and recyclers alike.
Data readiness is the other half
A passport is only as good as the data behind the identifier: composition per component, country of origin by step, care, and certifications with traceable documents. For most brands, this is where the real gap sits, not in the hardware. It is also the work that takes longest, which is why it should start well ahead of the deadline.
The principle to carry into every decision: be carrier-neutral on the framework, and deliberate about durability. The standard travels with the product, whichever carrier you choose.
